Northern Bears down Sharks, move into playoff spot amid push

Feb 15, 2024 | 12:47 PM

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears were feeling the love on Wednesday night, downing the Battlefords Sharks 2-1 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The win is the second in a row for P.A. after they managed a 4-1 win over the Weyburn Gold Wings on Saturday. The win also helped the Bears move into the final playoff spot in the SFU18AAAHL. Despite being tied in the standings with Weyburn, Prince Albert has the better record and therefore was able to push the Gold Wings out of the postseason with a game in hand.

Northern Bears head coach Steve Young spoke about the win and how his team is playing amid their push for the playoffs.

“It was the type of game where you had to stick with the process,” he said. “I thought [Cypress Classen] made some key saves during the game which can frustrate a hockey club at times and we stuck with the process and finally got two past her. It was one of the complete games that our team has been able to play and I think that holds well for us heading down the stretch.”

“I think with the team we have and the understanding of how we have to play has been there for most of the season but when there are rewards like winning a hockey game, I believe it reiterates [our gameplan] a little more and the girls believe in what we’re doing.”

Julia Cey and Elizabeth Udell were the only two Bears to find the scoresheet in the contest, each netting a goal and an assist.

On the other bench, Tien Woo was the lone goal scorer while Anneka Aspaas and Danika Dureau were credited with the assists.

In goal for P.A. was Annika Neufeldt who needed 18 saves to collect the win and help the Bears improve to 4-14-2-3 on the campaign.

Opposite her was Classen who managed 34 stops in the loss as the Battlefords fall to 10-13-0-3 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

Prince Albert now turns their focus to the weekend as they are set to host the Swift Current Wildcats in an all-important weekend doubleheader.

“[Swift Current is] another team who come in and play very hard,” Young explained. “They don’t give up much so when we get opportunities, we have to make sure it counts. At our end, we got to make sure we stay strong as well. They’re a tough team to play and we have to be ready for them.”

Game one is on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and game two is on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. both at the Art Hauser Centre.
