Parenteau brings home hardware from music awards

Apr 29, 2013 | 5:50 AM

Country artists, fans and everywhere in between gathered at the Dakota Dunes Casino in Saskatoon Saturday night for the Saskatchewan Country Music Association awards.

Prince Albert’s Donny Parenteau led the way with awards bringing home Album of the Year for Bring It On, Aboriginal Artist of the Year and brought home Fiddle and Specialty in the All Star Band categories.

He said, “It’s a good feeling. It’s always nice to be recognized by the work that you do, especially by your peers.”

Parenteau is not a stranger when it comes to winning the Aboriginal Artist of the Year award.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to win that a few times and that’s always a good feeling because I take that with a lot of pride because I feel I’m a representative to the aboriginal culture with my music and my motivational speaking tour,” he said.

He said at the end of the day it’s always nice to be recognized for what you do, but that’s not what it’s all about.

“If you get down to the meat and potatoes of what we do, we write songs, we sing songs, but we’re given a microphone and it’s up to us what we do with that microphone. And if we turn that into the better to make the world a better place and we can even influence anybody to make this world a better place, that’s what it’s about,” he explained.

The big award for Parenteau was taking home Album of the Year for “Bring It On.”

“The [CD] took on a life of its own when they placed it in the time capsule at the Regina Legislative Building to be reopened in 100-years from now, but also finding out it’s the only CD placed in the time capsule. So to win Album of the Year this year … to be nominated for a Juno for that particular CD, it’s like, ‘what? Really?’” Parenteau said.

He said you get out of life what you put in.

As for what’s next for Donny Parenteau?

He plans to take a few days off to unwind and teaching at his music school, the Donny Parenteau School of Music.

A Prince Albert woman also received some special recognition at the SCMAs.

Bernice Thall was the recipient of the Legacy award.

The award is given to someone who has devoted a lot of time and energy to improving the association.
