The Tara Longhorns of Ontario crowned themselves national champions on Sunday, winning the U15 Boy’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championship in Prince Albert.

The Longhorns took down the Newfoundland Selects in the gold medal match, winning 10-3 where Tara’s assistant coach Ty McComb talked about some of the adversity the team faced over the last week.

“We lost a game where we were up six in the bottom of seven and then it was raining and pouring, so we ended up losing that game – we actually did it to [the Elmira Heat] the next game. We lost a guy today, [we] don’t have a big bench so losing one person really hurts. [But] we came through and everyone believed in each other.”

Kieran McComb was on the rubber for the Longhorns in the championship game, throwing a complete game with three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Finlay Johnston and Nathan Miller both led the charge offensively for Tara with Johnston going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored while Miller went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored.

“I’m very proud of our boys for the hard work they put in this week,” continued Coach McComb. “We came from behind three or four times this week and [the team] never stopped – they never stopped believing in each other and pulled through in the end.”

For Newfoundland, Noah Stokes got the nod as starting pitcher where he surrendered 10 runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Rounding out the podium and taking home bronze at the tournament was the Napanee Express of Ontario. As for the Astros, they finished the tournament at an even record with four wins and four losses.
