Canada’s Pamela Ware finally breaks through for World Cup diving bronze

WUHAN, China — Pamela Ware of Montreal won bronze in the three-metre springboard in a FINA diving World Cup on Saturday, her first major international medal since 2013.

“I’m so happy about how the whole day went and yesterday,” Ware said. “I’ve been working on my consistency in training, and also competition, and I did exactly that today and I’m super happy that the last four competitions I had four fourth-places, and I finally broke that streak.”

Ware has a collection of recent near-podium finishes. She was fourth in the three-metre synchro springboard with Jennifer Abel at the 2016 Olympic Games, and fifth in the individual springboard at 2015 world championships.

Ware scored 348.75 points to finish behind silver medallist Han Wang of China (383.55). China’s Tingmao Shi scored 404.70 points for gold.

Ware’s bronze was Canada’s third medal at this week’s World Cup.

“I’m really happy about my first dive, that’s the one I’ve been missing recently so I’m really happy that I finally got it in,” said Ware.

Abel, from Laval, Que., was eighth with 315.30 points.

“Today was a hard day for me unfortunately,” she said. “I didn’t have one good dive so I’m pretty disappointed with my performance but at the same time there are so many things that I still have to improve, but I improved since last year, and I’m just really looking forward for next year to be better in my technique.”
