Wings Clipped: Maple Leafs dump Red Wings 6-2 in opener of home-and-home set
TORONTO — Auston Matthews and John Tavares offered a teaser Friday night of what Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been dreaming about all summer.
With a two-man advantage, Matthews used his speed to accelerate into the face-off circle, faked a shot and slid a pass to Tavares, who showed off his lightning-quick release with a gorgeous one-timer.
It was part of a four-goal outburst in the second period that helped lift the Maple Leafs to a 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
Jake Gardiner and Patrick Marleau also had power-play goals and Par Lindholm added a shorthanded goal — all within a span of 3:54 — to the delight of the 18,889 in attendance at Scotiabank Arena.
