Former Raider, WHL Champion Fonstad signs in Germany

Cole Fonstad is set to embark on a new chapter in his hockey career next season after signing a contract overseas.

The long-time Prince Albert Raider has signed a deal with the Straubing Tigers in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany.

“I can’t wait to come to Straubing,” said Fonstad. “I already know a few guys from the team and I’m looking forward to getting to know my other teammates, the whole organization, the fans and the city.”

Fonstad spent parts of five seasons with the Prince Albert Raiders and was a member of the 2019 WHL Championship team. He was also drafted into the NHL in 2018, going 128th overall in the 5th round to Montreal.

During his time in Prince Albert the 5’10” forward appeared in 219 regular season games, posting 63 goals and 119 assists. In the playoffs, he played in 28 games and tallied six goals and five assists with six of those points coming during the Raiders championship run in 2019. While at the 2019 Memorial Cup in Halifax, Fonstad had one goal and two assists in three games.

On Thanksgiving 2019, the Estevan product was traded to Everett for Recce Vitelli and a pair of picks in 2021 and another pick in 2022. Those picks would turn into Seth Tansem, Evhan Allan, and Dayce Derkatch.

Following his time in junior hockey, he spent parts of three seasons with the Cleveland Monsters in AHL where he managed 24 goals and 27 assists in 177 games.

“With his talent, his game intelligence and his excellent running skills, Cole has all the skills for a successful European career. He fits perfectly into our game system and I am therefore happy to observe his development here at the powder tower,” explains Jason Dunham, sporting director of the Straubing Tigers (translated to English from German).

Last season in the DEL, the Tigers finished fourth in the standings with a 34-17-2-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record and fell in the first round of playoffs in game seven against Grizzlys Wolfsburg.
