PAGC calls for review of PAPS’s procedures and standards after officer charged
Noting concerns with the number of in-custody deaths in 2021, the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) is calling for a thorough, unbiased review of the Prince Albert Police Service’s (PAPS) procedures, standards, and practices.
The statement comes in the wake of this week’s announcement that a 21-year member of the Prince Albert Police Service has been charged in the Nov. 2021 death of Saul Laliberte, who had been at the city’s detachment facility.
In a statement from PAGC Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte, he said the Council appreciates the efforts to improve detention facilities.
“We must not lose sight of the broader, more complex systemic changes needed to prevent such tragedies from happening again. We plan on closely monitoring the findings of the independent review led by former Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht, and we strongly urge for the prompt release of the report to ensure transparency and clarity for Saul Laliberte’s family and our larger community.”
