FSIN to speak alongside family of man who died in P.A. Police custody

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) said it stands behind the family of a man who died while in the custody of the Prince Albert Police Service.

Earlier this week, charges were announced against a long-time member of the police service regarding the in-custody death of Saul Laliberte. Those charges include criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessities of life.

In a media release from the FSIN, the organization said it supports the family of Laliberte and are sympathetic to their loss.

“The FSIN and the Chiefs of the Federation will stand behind Amelia Bloomfield, Saul’s Mother, throughout this journey to seek justice for her lost child,” the release stated.

The statement goes on to say that the FSIN recognize the appointment from the Ministry of Corrections and Public Safety of interim Chief Patrick Nogier and supports the quick action he has already taken.

However, the FSIN notes the concerns regarding the deaths of First Nations people in the care of police which they said are examples of systemic racism.

“There is no room for any public institution that risks managing the safety of any person; this includes the responsibility of Health and their acceptance to risk manage the safety of vulnerable people who are in police custody,” the statement reads.

The FSIN have planned a news conference for July 19 in Saskatoon where they will speak alongside the family of Saul Laliberte.

The family is requesting privacy at this time.
