WHAT WE SAW ON 4TH STREET

Some sweet news to share in P.A

Jul 6, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Picture a warm sunny day in Prince Albert with nothing but steady traffic driving along Fourth Street East when something colourful yet different catches your eye.

The colours are pink and blue and they belong to several bags of cotton candy, strung across a makeshift clothesline on the front lawn of a cozy house.

That cotton candy was available to purchase at $2 a bag, a steal of a deal.

When passing through River Street and eventually Fourth Street East, this display caught the attention of one paNOW reporter who was intrigued not just by the candy but why someone was set up selling them on a Wednesday afternoon.

The woman selling the cotton candy didn’t want to be named but told our reporter that she wanted to do what she could to help those who were selling the goodies on Canada Day.

She explained how the cotton candy stand was a hit at the local July 1 celebrations but then, in a matter of moments, the clouds came in. Eventually, the winds started howling and the rain came tumbling down.

Suddenly, the fields were empty as people hunkered down from the storm which meant no more cotton candy to be sold.

The vendors were left with multiple bags of cotton candy and nowhere to put them.

That’s where this heartfelt woman came in and decided to set up a mini shop on her lawn. No fancy neon signs or decorations, just some bags of candy, some clothespins to hold them, a Tupperware money holder, and a handmade sign reading $2.

Since the day after Canada Day, this woman has sat outside and waited for would-be customers to come by.

To no one’s surprise, the cotton candy was a hit and with the decent weather Prince Albert has experienced this week, there was no shortage of children and children at heart wanting to buy a bag.

She told our reporter that Wednesday would be the last day she could sell the sweets before they went bad but was confident she would have them sold by day’s end.

When all was said and done, she said she just wanted to help. She saw a need and went out of her way to make sure this small, local cotton candy business could get some money back in these difficult economic times.

So, the next time you’re driving around P.A., you never know what you will find. You may come across some cotton candy or other sweet treat and make someone’s day.
