Recapping minor lacrosse from 2023 season

Jun 29, 2023 | 2:00 PM

Another season of Lacrosse in Prince Albert has nearly wrapped up in 2023.

New champions were crowned from U11 all the way to U17 with each championship contest being competitively tight right down to the final buzzer.

See below the championship matchups along with a brief recap of how the title games played out.

U11 finals

At the U11 level, it was the battle of Shellbrook for the league title between the Black Swarm and the White Swarm.

The final matchup was knotted at seven heading into the third and final period before the Black Swarm blew the game wide open. They scored a quick pair to go up two before the White Swarm got one of their own. Late in the period, however, Dallan Kasner iced it for the Black Swarm scoring his third of the game to make it a 10-8 final score.

U13 finals

The Prince Albert Giants capped off their perfect season with a crown and they did it in nail-biting fashion.

After going down 2-1 in the first against the Prince Albert Rivermen, the Giants managed to blank the Rivermen in the middle frame 2-0 to take a narrow 3-2 lead heading into the third. The Rivs managed to tie it back up midway through the period before the Giants scored two quick goals less than a minute apart to go up 5-3. The Rivermen scored one late to gather momentum, but the defense stood tall for the Giants where they took the U13 championship 5-4.

U15 finals

The Prince Albert Trappers hoisted the championship at the U15 level, knocking off the defending champs the Prince Albert 82’s in the process.

The Trappers got off to a hot start in the finals, scoring three unanswered to open the game while finishing the first period up on the 82s, 3-1. Tucker Prodaehl scored again for the 82s at the start of the second before the Trappers went back-to-back to extend their lead. Just before the period ended, Lincoln McGaghey lit the lamp for the 82’s to keep it at a two-goal game heading into the third.

The Trappers began the final frame with a pair of goals to extend the lead but the 82’s came storming back with three unanswered to make it a one-goal game entering the back half of the period. But the Trapper’s defense stayed strong while the offense scored two more as they claim the U15 championship with a 9-6 score.

U17 finals

A rematch of the 2022 U17 finals was on deck for the 2023 finals between the Prince Albert Smokejumpers and the Prince Albert Lumberjax.

Fast forward to the second with the score knotted at two, Carter McShannock scored to put the Smokejumpers on top by one before Lumberjax scored back-to-back markers to round out the period and go up 4-3 going into period three. The offense continued to roll for the Jax, adding another pair in the third to extend the lead. The Smokejumpers managed to tally one late in the game but by then, it was too late as the Lumberjax took it 6-4.
