Stabbing assault conviction for inmate at Sask. Pen

Jun 29, 2023 | 1:00 PM

One inmate has been convicted in Prince Albert Provincial Court for his part in the stabbing and beating of another inmate, Brandon Peeteetuce, in 2021.

Judge Steven Schiefner found that Mohamud Dirie was guilty of assault causing bodily harm, a reduction from the original charge of aggravated assault.

Dirie was incarcerated following a first-degree murder conviction in Toronto that saw another person shot to death, in retaliation for the murder of Dirie’s older brother.

Two of the Dirie brothers, not Mohamud however, were investigated as part of a Toronto police gang investigation that also exposed ties to former mayor Rob Ford.

In Mohamud Dirie’s Saskatchewan trial, the Crown called two witnesses, a guard from the Saskatchewan Penitentiary who was the first to arrive and the RCMP officer that investigated the incident.

Video evidence of the area at the jail showed another inmate, Azizullah Hadi and Dirie placing a meal tray and a sweater in the door between a range and the adjacent recreational area so it can’t close properly.

Peeteetuce is seen in the area, approached by Hadi (who was identified by the guard) and making stabbing motions towards his arm.

The victim runs away and hides behind a table but is chased by both assailants. Dirie grabs Peeteetuce, pushed him to the ground and then both Hadi and Dirie are seen kicking and punching him.

Neither the accused nor the victim cooperated with the police investigation but Dirie was convicted on the testimony of both officers.

Peeteetuce did not require hospitalization and was treated by the staff nurse at the Penitentiary.

The trial was held on June 26th in Prince Albert Provincial Court. Dirie will next be in court on July 28th for sentencing.
