Second trial confirmed in Byron Bear murder case

Jun 13, 2023 | 4:00 PM

One of five men charged in connection to a Prince Albert murder investigation, will be tried by judge and jury at Court of King’s Bench.

That was the outcome of Riley Primeau’s preliminary inquiry hearing Monday at provincial court. While a charge of second degree murder was initially laid, there was a consent committal instead to manslaughter.

The reason for the committal on the lesser charge is protected by a publication ban.

The case itself dates back to December, 2021, when Byron Bear was reported missing by his family and thought to be the victim of a serious assault. His remains were found two months later near Hague.

Also charged are Raine Farrow, Kyle Burns, Daniel Oliver, and Jackson Dwight Henry.

Burns and Farrow have preliminary inquiry hearings scheduled for June 27 and July 26.

Daniel Oliver’s preliminary inquiry was held in March.

Over the course of four days, dozens of witnesses were asked to appear and provide evidence that is protected by a publication ban. Oliver’s matters have been also been committed for trial although no dates have been set.

At last word from police, a warrant was still active for Henry’s arrest. He was also identified as the final suspect in the case.
