Canadian Derk Gee finishes second for fourth time at Giro d;italia
TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO, Italy — Canadian Derek Gee recorded his fourth second-place finish at the Giro d’Italia on Friday, finishing behind Colombian Santiago Buitrago in a gruelling Stage 19.
Buitrago finished 51 seconds ahead of Gee and one minute 46 seconds ahead of Magnus Cort and Primoz Roglič, who just missed out on bonus seconds. Buitrago caught Gee, the lone Canadian in the race, with 1.5 kilometres to go.
The 25-year-old from Ottawa, in his first Grand Tour event, has six top-five finishes in the 19stages to date — four seconds and two fourths.
Gee stands 22nd in the overall standings. He is second behind Italy’s Jonathan Milan in the points race and second behind France’s Thibaut Pinot in the King of the Mountain standings.
