Saskatoon school division facing backlash after email shared online

May 26, 2023 | 9:55 AM

An email sent to Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools (GSCS) principals has surfaced on social media and has caused some to speak out against it.

The photo being shared directs staff who decide to take students to the Nutrien Children’s Festival from June 1-4 to avoid a “Rainbow Tent” that will be on site.

The email said the school division will not be supporting the tent and asked that the information be passed to teachers and parent chaperones.

However, the letter added GSCS schools are still welcome to attend the festival.

In a statement, OUTSaskatoon said it recognizes the dilemma that teachers, families and others work through when discussing issues related to identity, but added it finds it deeply regrettable that GSCS has issued this directive to limit children’s experiences at the festival.

LGBTQ advocate Jack Saddleback took to Twitter saying this is trying to fuel divide by bullying teachers, students and chaperones from attending the “Rainbow Tent.”

Saddleback continued to say this type of behaviour from GSCS further pushes the views to dehumanize 2SLGTBQIA+ communities by negating our very existence within all communities.

650 CKOM reached out to GSCS for comment.
