Art, age and aptitude at Birch Hills fundraiser auction

May 4, 2023 | 5:00 PM

The saying that age is just is number can’t be more evident than the creations of the day children and residents in a senior’s home in Birch Hills.

The ages of the artists have a wide range, from one year old to 105 years old and there are 88 pieces.

“There’s quite a broad range of ages that are on there,” said Tristen Folden, director of the TLC Daycare.

The daycare had originally planned to have an in-person art viewing with wine but advance ticket sales were too low, so they switched to digital, which is going well.

“We moved it to a Facebook online and we seem to be getting a lot more interest this time,” said Folden.

The art is listed as posts in a private Facebook group with a link to the daycare’s main page. It started May 2 at 4 p.m. and ends on May 6 at 8:00 p.m.

They tried to make art something all ages could do. For instance, very small children would paint a background then older children would do more detailed work on top.

This particular piece was created by two artists, one 95 years old and the other 105. (submitted)

“We don’t do the art for them by any means, but we help guide them in a sense,” she said.

Toddlers did finger painting that staff cut out and turned into larger works.

“We were able to get together for one piece of art with the day care children and the nursing home residents,” said.

The artists could use inspiration.

Many of the buyers are family members or known to either age range of artists but there are some people with no connection that are bidding.

Funds raised from the sale will go to the respective organization that created it, so the nursing home will keep the money its residents earned and vice versa.
