Charges follow fatal Melfort crash

Melfort RCMP have charged one person in connection with a collision that killed one and injured another last weekend.

A truck travelling East on Highway 789 collided with a car travelling South on the Kinistino grid last Saturday, Sept. 2 at 6:18 p.m.

The driver of the car, Quinn Sheremeta, 46, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 36-year-old passenger was airlifted to a hospital in Saskatoon with unknown injuries.

Officers arrested the driver of the truck a short distance away from the crash site after he fled on foot. He was transported to the Melfort hospital with injuries.

Troy Tolofson, 46, of the Melfort area is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, two counts of failing to remain at the scene of a crash and one count of resisting arrest.

Tolofson appeared in Melfort Provincial Court this morning at 10 a.m. His next appearance will be on Sept. 12. The charges against him have not been proven in court. 

The investigation remains ongoing.
