Stray dog tale runs gamut from fun to sad

‘Sylvia’ is about a dog’s life – and about how it affects the relationship between husband and wife, man and dog and eventually, woman and dog.

In Odyssey’s Productions’ upcoming performance of the A.R. gurney play from the 1990s, all acting is done by humans and the story line is both funny, sweet and sad.

“The show is about a man who brings home a dog, much to his wife’s dismay and it causes friction in their marriage,” said Kim Morrall, the production’s director. “He basically kind of falls in love with this dog.”

From outright rejection to allowing the dog to stay only for several days, Kate – played by Patty Huyd-Koroluk – does not appreciate the stray Sylvia in her home.

Morrall explained that the play has everything, drama, comedy, a musical episode and some tragedy.

“If anyone has a dog, it’s just good entertainment.”

The role of Greg, who finds Sylvia and brings her home, is played by Alderic Geroget while the wild entertainment of being human and acting like a dog falls to Shania Cabilao.

There were enough actors who wanted to be part of the cast that each role has an understudy and there are essentially two casts.

As they generally do, one of the shows will see Odyssey donate the proceeds from a 50/50 draw to the Prince Albert SPCA.

This is Odyssey’s second production of the season and starts at the Prince Albert Wildlife Federation on Apr. 19.

Tickets are available online or at Canadian Tire.
