Gravy Bowl championship returns to Prince Albert for Poutine Week

Prince Albert area residents are being encouraged to bring their appetites as one of the most mouth-watering fundraisers makes its return this week.

Poutine Week, which helps raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters, runs from March 17 to March 26. Local development coordinator Natasha Thomson explained they are hoping to build on last year’s success.

“It raised about $4,000 for us, and it was so exciting just to get so many people involved. We even had a lot of people sign up to become mentors,” she said.

A total of seven local restaurants are involved this year, and $4 from every poutine sold will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs. Thomson noted there are currently 15 children on a waitlist for a mentor.

“We are always fundraising because we always have more young people that need to be matched with a big brother/ big sister. This money really does help people in our community,” she said.

Competing this year for the prestigious Poutine Choice Award and Gravy Bowl Championship are Boston Pizza, Lulu’s Kitchen, Original Joe’s, Ricky’s All Day Grill, Rock & Iron Clubhouse, Shananigan’s and Knotty Pine Bistro.

Thomson encouraged people to post their photos to social media. Each day there will be a draw for a $25 gift card.

“If you actually go and eat all of them, we even have a $100 gift card to give away,” Thomson said.

Knotty Pine Bistro was declared last year’s champion with its original dill pickle poutine. Owner Barb Lychak said it’s a great cause to support.

“It’s a good way for me to give back to the community considering I’m here seven days a week so I can’t really volunteer any other way and it’s doing what I’m doing,” she said.

When asked if there was pressure to retain, Lychak replied no.

“We just want the community support and I do hope we win. I want my trophies back,” she said.
