Robbery suspect avoids trial, enters guilty pleas

A man wanted in connection to a series of robberies, will not face trial and has instead opted to enter a number of guilty pleas.

Joshua Natowhow appeared in person when the matter was spoken to Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Last October, RCMP were called to Sturgeon Lake First Nation for a report of a stolen truck.

It was believed at the time the same suspect might be responsible for some robberies and an attempted robbery at Christopher Lake the day before.

Following a search of the community, officers spotted the stolen truck and deployed a spike belt to stop it.

The driver then ran away into a nearby field where he was found hours later, with the help of the Prince Albert Police’s dog service.

Naytowhow, who is from Sturgeon Lake and was 30 years old at the time of his arrest last fall originally faced nine charges including resisting arrest, robbery with a firearm, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer.

On Wednesday, guilty pleas were entered to resisting arrest and operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer.

With the respect to the other matter from Christopher Lake, Naytowhow has previously entered a guilty to plea to using an imitation firearm while committing robbery.

He’ll be sentenced on both matters when the case returns to court on April 20.

In the meantime, a pre-sentence report has been ordered which will canvass Naytowhow’s background and addictions issues, as well as his risk to re-offend in a violent manner.
