Local athletes light up the stage after first weekend of Canada Winter Games

The Canada Winter Games continue on the east coast and some local athletes are putting on their best performances.

Team Saskatchewan has already claimed four medals going into day four of the games, the first coming in the biathlon as Prudhomme’s Rhiann Arnold took bronze. The second and third medals, both silvers, came in the male and female trampoline – synchro. Halle Pipko and Jamie Reschke of Regina claimed a silver medal in the female event while Wilson Reimche and Connor Wehage of Saskatoon finished second in the male event.

On Tuesday morning, Saskatchewan flagbearer Luca Veeman won a silver in the men’s 1,500 m speed skating event with a time of 1:58:49.

While Prince Albert and North Battleford don’t have a medal to their name yet, there have been some strong performances from local and area athletes so far.

In men’s hockey, Prince Albert Raiders’ prospect Luke Moroz scored his second of the tournament to put Saskatchewan up 1-0 in the first period of its win against Manitoba. Lee Shurgot, Cole Reschny and Kazden Mathies all added their firsts as Sask rolled to its second-straight win. The team beat New Brunswick 4-1 in its first game of the tournament. The team will now face Quebec in the final pool A game on Tuesday afternoon.

Monday morning marked the first-ever karate matches at the Canada Games. Sadie McFarlane, 16, of Prince Albert competed early on but did not reach the final.

Moving to speedskating where Lambert Schwartzenberger of Christopher Lake competed in the men’s 1,500 m event. Schwartzenberger did not reach the quarterfinals but did finish in the top three of the bottom bracket quarterfinals. The semi-final is scheduled for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, on day two of the competition Talance Alyse Kalmakoff, 13, from Maidstone and Zadee Chapman from Battleford competed in freestyle skiing. Zadee finished eighth overall while Talance placed 10^th.
