Holy Cross School raises over $3,000 for new NICU

A big cheque was presented this week to Prince Albert’s Victoria Hospital Foundation.

Students at École Holy Cross raised over $3,000 for the new Malhotra neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Principal Gisele Stalwick told paNOW discussions started last fall and there was a unanimous consensus to support a local cause.

‘We know it’s important for our little people that are born and vulnerable and for their families to be close to home. We need that service in Prince Albert for the surrounding areas,” she said.

During the week of Jan 23, each day had a different theme. There was a pajama day, a popcorn day, a hat and toque day, and there was even a sock hop

“And it was funny because some of the students didn’t know what a sock hop is,” Stalwick noted, so it provided an additional educational opportunity.

The school’s enrollment is 309 students, and each student was asked to donate $10. This worked out to $2 for each day of activity.

“They did not have to participate but it was open just to do some social justice work with our school and our students,” Stalwick said. “It’s good to help our community.”

The grand opening ceremony for the Malhotra NICU was held last September.
