City welcomes Métis plan to buy 26 acres near hospital

Council was unanimous in its support of a plan by the Métis Nation Saskatchewan (MN-S) to buy 26 acres of land in the vicinity of the Victoria Hospital.

All councillors supported the proposal, which planning department manager Craig Guidinger said was very detailed and well thought out.

“What they’ll be doing in Prince Albert is setting up a service centre which will continue to build relationships with Métis individuals and their families,” Guidinger said in the presentation to council during Monday’s executive committee meeting.

The MN—S has put a conditional offer on the land just south of where the new First Nations University is planned, near both the hospital and the Alfred Jenkins Field House.

Representatives of the MN—S were at the meeting but chose not to speak as part of the presentation.

The Métis Nation—Saskatchewan has been looking at investments in the City for some time and is now proposing to three of the 26 acres they are planning to buy to build a 10,000-square-foot office space and a future child care facility.

They are planning 12 such developments around the province.

Mayor Greg Dionne said he is looking forward to the project going ahead because of the potential for even more growth in the future.

“Three acres for one building, a few more acres for another one so they’re still going to have options for expansion into the future,” he said.

The MN—S plan is one of several developments happening in the West Hill area, including the expansion of the Victoria Hospital which will have development start this spring, the announcement of a new building for the First Nation’s University and an apartment complex.
