Fleeing suspect opts out of trial and enters guilty pleas

A woman charged after a reported stolen vehicle attempted to flee from police has taken responsibility for the role she played.

On Friday, guilty pleas were entered on Brittany Elderkin’s behalf to dangerous driving, flight from police, and possession of ammunition while prohibited from doing so. The 28-year-old is currently in custody and appeared in person for Friday’s hearing at provincial court, which had originally been scheduled for trial.

The case dates back to the afternoon of March 20, 2022, when police were called to the 200 block of 15th Street West. The person who called reported a vehicle stolen by two people with a gun.

The pair tried to flee but were found soon after by police around Sixth Ave. W. and 28th Street.

An arrest warrant was also issued at the time for a 31-year-old man. Jeffrey Jobb’s matters were however later stayed by the Crown.

Elderkin had also been charged on this matter with robbery and assault with a weapon, but those were withdrawn by the Crown on Friday.

In addition to the above-mentioned incident, Elderkin also entered guilty pleas from unrelated incidents ranging from driving while disqualified to breaches of court orders.

Sentencing has been adjourned to Feb. 13, to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be completed. The report will provide details regarding Elderkin’s background that may assist the judge in making a decision.

Crown lawyer Kristen indicated to Judge Daunt she is seeking a global sentence of 18 months and a two-year driving ban. There would also be an order, prohibiting Elderkin from owning or possessing any firearms or explosives for a period of 10 years.

Defence is seeking a jail sentence of 10 months, which would work out to time served.

Elderkin’s criminal record includes a conviction in 2021, for being behind the wheel of a vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting. Elderkin was also charged and convicted after a traffic stop in Saskatoon on July 17, 2020. She was out on a release order at the time.

A sawed-off rifle was found inside a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Prince Albert.
