HAPPY CART YEAR

Mystery solved: Introducing the shopping cart of Kinsmen Park

Did you have a “Happy Cart Year” last weekend and are you getting ready for “Carti Gras”?

One Prince Albert family said they have and their random way of spreading cheer is getting noticed.

Since November, a Safeway shopping cart has been left off the side of the road on First Avenue West, across from 23 Street West on the border of Kinsmen Park.

Kendall Kerr and his family noticed the cart was not being removed as per policy. Kerr said he contacted Safeway to retrieve the cart but so far, that hasn’t happened.

Rather than move it themselves, the family wanted to have some fun with it.

“It just came to us, let’s have some fun and spread some Christmas cheer,” Kerr said.

Over Christmas time, they stuck some garlands, and red ornaments and a sign that said “Merry Xmas from Safeway”, to give it a festive outfit.

“Come Christmas time, it was still here so we thought we’d decorate it for Christmas and New Year’s”

Kerr said he decorated it for New Year’s with balloon cutouts and a sign that read “Happy Cart Year.”

Unfortunately, the signs kept getting stolen and the cart has been knocked over due to city crews plowing and grading the road. But that hasn’t stopped the Kerrs from continuing this new tradition.

“(Now), we’re just celebrating Ukrainian Christmas,” he said.

Currently, the cart is adorned with Christmas decorations and a sign that reads “Merry Christmas” in Ukrainian on blue and gold, the colours of that country.

If the metal and plastic contraption remains even longer, Valentine’s Day and “Carti” Gras will be added to the mix.

The sight of this cart is nothing new to the city as paNOW reported in September, many retailers were not impressed with the number of shopping carts stolen and left out in the streets.

A large number of those carts eventually end up in the city landfill.

Kerr said they have had a lot of fun with this cart and wanted to spread a little cheer to the neighbourhood.

“People that have come by it have enjoyed it and liked it, and given thumbs up.”
