Alleged vehicle vandal to remain locked up over New Year’s Eve

A teenage boy, charged in connection to a recent plague of vehicle vandalisms in Prince Albert, also has two outstanding robbery charges.

That was learned Friday morning when the 17-year-old appeared by video in court, from the youth residence where he is currently being housed. As per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the boy’s name cannot be published, nor any information that might identify him.

The alleged theft related offence happened on Dec. 20. Police said in that case a teen and a female accomplice broke into a vehicle on Bradshaw Place, and stole a number of items including sunglasses, cigars, loose change, hunting knives and a pair of golf passes.

The pair were then found walking eastbound, and were being closely followed by a white Ford 150 truck. On at least one occasion, items were handed to the people in the truck, police said.

When police engaged, the teen and the woman were arrested, but the truck fled and has not been located.

The woman later told police she had been “car shopping” to support her meth addiction.

With respect to the teen’s robbery charges, they date back to June and September of this year.

The teen was allegedly one of four suspects who attacked two random strangers, while they were walking along the riverbank. One of the victims was reportedly kicked and punched over 20 times and suffered a broken nose. Her shoes and make up were taken.

On Sept. 21, the teen is alleged to have entered a convenience store and showed the clerk the two large knives he was carrying. He then told the clerk, his “higher-ups” had forced him to rob the store.

When police arrived, the suspect, who was dressed all in black and was wearing a black and white bandanna, was found behind the till and was arrested without incident.

The purpose of Friday’s hearing was for possible bail, but instead the end result was the teen being remanded to Jan. 9.

Provincial Court Judge Hugh Harradence indicated a concern for the offences that had occurred and explained that he wanted to see a better bail plan proposed, that could ensure the teen would be properly supervised if released back into the care of his family,

The co-accused in the vehicle vandalisms is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Jan. 12.

During the month of December, the Prince Albert Police Service received over 100 complaints related to mischief and theft. In many cases, windows to vehicles were smashed.
