Vanity Cup stays in Saskatchewan but goes South

With a combined weight of 34.76 lbs of walleye caught over the weekend, Troy Robinson and Terry Nagel of Beuna Vista were the top catching fishermen of Saskatchewan’s highest-paid walleye tournament.

Both winners said the tournament was a success and ran very smoothly including weighing the fish.

“This was the fastest and best weigh-in I’ve ever been in the Vanity and I’ve been here 20-plus years,” Nagel said.

Only eight of the 160 slots in the tournament went unfilled, but organizer Jim Chute said next year it will be sold out.

This year, the tournament enjoyed good weather and some good fishing.

“It went absolutely perfectly. Not one complaint, it went smooth, and smooth and smooth,” Chute said.

While the top catching team takes home $100,000, altogether the tournament gives away over $300,000.

Prizes are given out for second and third place (including new boats from Lund) and the ‘tournament within a tournament’ in which anglers that choose to buy in get a chance to win even more money.

Many of the teams come ahead of time and pre-fish the river for the week ahead as a scouting mission for the best catch locations.

Unlike some years, the weather cooperated this year.

“We’ve had worse weather; we’ve had snow and ice and rain and sleet and wind, but they were fishing in shirt sleeves yesterday and the day before. It was wonderful,” Chute said.

The money earned from the tournament is used to support local initiatives in the Nipawin and District Regional Park and around the community, such as the splash park.

Local minor hockey teams provide support in volunteer labour as do other community members.

Next year for the 30^th anniversary of the tournament, Chute said there will be extra prizes and features to mark the anniversary.
