Making Your Fitness Fit

As a certified Personal Trainer with several years of experience, an extremely common thing I hear people say is they don’t have time for exercise. We tend to take on so much we leave our own health and fitness on the bottom of the list. By the time we get around to it, we’re exhausted and have no desire to do anything other than rest or sleep.

It doesn’t have to be that way. There are ways to make time for yourself. There are ways to make fitness fit your busy life. Here are some tips to help you make your workouts work for you:

1. Some movement is better than no movement. You don’t have to have an all or nothing mentality about it. Your workouts don’t have to be long and complicated. Thirty minutes a day on a consistent basis can go along way to achieving your results.

Do a self-audit of how you spend your time throughout each day. Be honest with yourself. Find 30 minutes to get your body moving as opposed to sitting there scrolling. I’ll be the first one to admit I’m guilty of playing on my phone when I could be doing cardio instead.

2. Make it a part of your daily routine – the same way you make time to eat, shower and go to work. When it’s a part of something you do regularly, it tends to feel off when you don’t do it. The hardest part of it all is to get started. However, once you get that momentum going, not only will you physically feel better, it could also enhance your mood! And, who doesn’t want to feel good everyday?

3. Schedule it. Plan it out. Get organized. The simpler you make it for yourself, the easier it’ll be to adhere to. It’s an important meeting with yourself because you need to take care of you! If someone asks you to do something when you have your workouts scheduled, you can ask them to join you or get together with you another time.

When you plan out what workouts you’re going to do on the particular days throughout the week, your vision is much clearer as to what exactly you need to get done. When you know what needs to get done, it keeps you more accountable.

Being organized will also save you! Before you go to bed at night, get your gym bag ready with everything you’ll need for the next day – gym clothes, towel, gym gear, protein shake and whatever else you use to conquer your training. When you do this, you don’t have to think about it in the morning. You can just grab your bag and throw it in the car. It’s all there waiting for you. Nothing gets missed. And, you don’t have to fumble around before the coffee kicks in trying to figure out what you need to bring with you.

4. Make it convenient and close to you. Whatever type of activity you engage in, let it be as close to you as possible. Convenience equals time saved. And, that can go a long way towards fitting it comfortably in your day. Pick a gym close to you. If the gym isn’t your thing, create a home fitness center or join a local group that’s near your home or your work.

The easier you make getting to your workouts, the better it’s going to be for you. If you have to travel across town or some place way out of the way, the challenge of getting there with enough time to train could cause you to skip it entirely.

5. Disconnect from your devices and your social media. Getting away from your electronics to spend time on exercise will do wonders for you both mentally and physically. You’ll also be amazed at how much time is wasted going through the various platforms. That’s time you could use on making sure you accomplish your goals. It’s extremely satisfying reaching (and exceeding) something you’ve set out to do – especially when you’ve put in the work to make it work for you!

Whatever options you implement, use them on a regular basis so it becomes a habit you don’t even have to think much about. You just do it! The best thing you can do for you and those around you is to take care of yourself. You’re worth it. You deserve it. And, I know you can do it.
