Weyburn prepares for possible flooding of Souris river

Apr 14, 2011 | 4:57 PM

Weyburn is getting ready for what possibly could be an overflow of the Souris river in the city.

Barricades have been put up coming in from both ends of the city along Highway 39 and then closer in at the intersection of Government Road. Crews have put up sandbags around parts of the road protecting a number of businesses

Darcy Francis has been living in the city since 2000. He's never seen the levels this high.

“I think everyone's really concerned about it,” said Francis. “The town itself is like a big family.”

Kim Schneider says she is quite surprised at how high the levels have gotten.

“I wasn't really expecting a lot of flooding in this area because there wasn't really that big of a concern,” said Schneider.

One of the businesses that could be affected is the Travelodge Motel.

Manager George Siourouins says he's keeping his eyes closely on the rising levels.

“If the water comes over and floods the business, it'll probably take a couple of months to clean it. So in that way I am a little concerned.”
