Catholic Family Services introduces walk/bike ride for people seeking refuge

Aug 30, 2022 | 3:28 PM

The Catholic Family Services of Prince Albert announced on Tuesday that they will be participating in Ride For Refuge, a walk/bike ride to raise money for mental health services in the community and surrounding areas.

The event is held annually across the country and this year will be the inaugural ride in Prince Albert, something that event director, Margaret Duncombe, said will be a fun event for the whole family.

“The walkers will go one way and the bikers will go the other,” she said. “The whole ride should take around an hour and then there will be a barbeque when we’re finished.”

Riders and walkers will begin at the 0k marker of the Rotary Trail on the south side of the Alfred Jenkins Centre. Walkers will have a 2.5k or 5k option beginning at marker 0 while riders will have a 10k or 20k option. Riders may also choose to complete the entire Rotary Trail loop for a total of 22.5 kilometres.

According to Duncombe, Prince Albert’s ride will be one of the longest in Canada.

“Some of the other charities are going only 20k,” she said. “But our full Rotary Trial is 22.5k and so we’re just going to go around the whole trail.”

This event will be different from other walks and rides though as participants will have to register as teams.

Teams are formed by their team captain, who plays the key role of leader, recruiter, fundraiser, planner, and cheerleader. As captains, they can recruit as many people as they want as there is no limit to how big your team can be. Duncombe also said that she’s hoping for 150 people this year.

“As of right now, we have about 40 people and 13 team captains,” she said. “We’re looking for around 20 teams this year and about seven to eight people per team.”

The ride will go on no matter the weather and is scheduled to take place on Oct. 1.
