Ring claims Senior Men’s Northern Championship for second straight year

At the rate he’s going, Martin Ring might have a golf trophy or two named after him in the Prince Albert area when his career is over.

Ring was the winner of the Senior Men’s Northern Championships at Cooke Municipal Golf Course on Aug. 18. It was the second consecutive year he had won the event.

“It’s kind of one of our premier events in each division,” said Ring. “So the opportunity to bring home the Senior Northern Men’s Championship is pretty special. It’s the Bob Hemsworth Memorial Trophy and I’ve known the Hemsworth family since I was a little boy, so it was pretty special.”

Ring’s big win didn’t start out with an overwhelming lead, however. It was a comeback victory for him on his home track.

“First round, I was 72, one over par,” said Ring. “There was a whole bunch of us, I think it was eight of us tied at 72. One of our clubmates, Bruce Ede, had a really great first round, shooting 66….It is only a two-round total tournament, so I knew the second round I was going to have to get down to work.”

Get down to work is exactly what Ring did. He bogeyed the opening hole of the day but that was as bad as the day got as he never shot above par the rest of the round and rattled off five birdies for good measure to put himself in the lead to stay.

“My driver was working really well, but most importantly it came down to my short game,” said Ring. “I made some really good putts, made some really good saves. All in all, it was a really solid golf game.”

There were a couple of holes on the course that can provide a challenge for the short game in particular, with Ring naming holes one and ten as two of the tougher ones. But as tough as the course can be, Ring knows most of the people competing in this event and they were all eager to play it.

“I saw them down in Estevan for the provincial seniors,” he said. “They were already talking about coming up to Cooke to play the senior men’s. You get to see these guys through the senior circuit.”

Ring added that he isn’t taking too much time away from the course. He was back at Cooke the very next afternoon and was already preparing for the Provincial Mixed Championship at Elk Ridge.
