‘It’s truly a blessing: Dr. Lalita Malhotra honoured and surprised at retirement ceremony

Over 150 people came to Plaza 88 on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the long and successful 45-year career of the “Angel of the North”, Dr. Lalita Malhotra.

Family, friends, and even some of the children and people she delivered were at the event, along with former patients and people she helped along the way and couldn’t believe the turnout for the event.

“It’s an honour that (everyone) came,” she said. “These relationships go back 45 years so I’m really thankful to them and for all the support that they’ve given me.”

Mayor Greg Dionne was also in attendance where he presented Dr. Malhotra with the city’s rarest award, the Award of Merit from the City of Prince Albert.

To the surprise of Dr. Malhotra, her longtime friend Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Russ Mirasty and his wife, Donna, were in attendance.

Mirasty thanked Dr. Malhotra for her work, not only in Prince Albert but in the province as well.

“The best part of my job is coming out to meet people throughout the province and to recognize those who’ve contributed to their community in their own way, their significant way, and in the case of Dr. Malhotra, very significant,” he said. “Certain individuals continue to serve their communities and you stand there with (Queen Elizabeth II). So, on behalf of (Queen Elizabeth II), myself, and Donna, we thank you.”

Dr. Malhotra came to Canada from India in 1975 and has since helped deliver over 10,000 babies in Saskatchewan.
