Elk Ridge pulls off sunny Sunday Shootout after rainy cancellation of PGA Tour Canada event

Jun 26, 2022 | 5:56 PM

Ryan Danberg was “utterly exhausted” on Sunday after the Elk Ridge Sunday Shootout.

Danberg, the managing partner of Elk Ridge Resort and former tour golfer in his own right, was physically spent after playing 18 holes among a field of 102 PGA Tour Canada golfers that stuck around, even after the Elk Ridge Open was cancelled due to rain delays. Dealing with that cancellation and all the delays beforehand is where his emotional fatigue came from.

“I’ve been in that situation before, so I felt for them. You see the look on their faces, I mean this is these guys’ livelihood. This is what they’re doing for a living,” an emotional Danberg said. “And all they wanted was to be updated but we just couldn’t update them and we didn’t know where our golf course was at.”

Instead of just cancelling the event and sending everybody on their way to the next tour stop, the Elk Ridge Resort ownership group and PGA Tour Canada decided to whip up the Sunday Shootout. The one-day Sunday Shootout had a $40,000 prize pool for players to hunt, including some other hole prizes.

Cooper Dossey from Austin, Tex., shot a stellar -8, 62 to win Sunday’s event. He finished two strokes better than Eric Lilleboe, Jimmy Jones, Jack Avrit, Wilson Furr, and Josh Hart, who were all tied for second place at -6.

“We couldn’t have scripted it better,” Danberg said. “All the players came up to me this morning and they were ecstatic that we did that and made the best of a bad situation.”

Even though Mother Nature didn’t cooperate until making Sunday sunny and perfect for golf, Danberg appreciated how the tournament was handled.

“Full kudos to the PGA Tour Canada. I mean it was a hard decision on what they had to do. I’ve got to talk to a lot of their guys that are making these hard decisions, and it’s not easy to do,” Danberg said. “These guys all came here and invested a week of their time and money to try and make points and cheques and all that.”
