Sell-out Duffer Classic a big success for Prince Albert chamber

The old adage says business is done on the golf course, and while there were many businesses out at Mark’s Nine Golf and Country Club last Thursday, commerce may have been on the back-burner for many as they enjoyed an event put on by the Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber held their annual Duffer Classic at the course last Thursday. While holding events has been trickier the last two years due to the pandemic, this year people showed no shyness getting out.

“It was fantastic,” said chamber CEO Patty Hughes. “We had a great day out. We actually had sold out and had a full board of teams that were there. It was great for the business community to be able to get together in a fun, social networking event.”

Golf may have been a bit of a secondary consideration on this day, as players took a laid-back approach to that aspect of the event.

“Everybody really enjoyed the day,” Hughes said. “We had a lot of positive feedback. People just felt really at ease and thankful to be able to get out and have a good time and connect with fellow business members.”

The event serves as an unofficial summer kickoff for the chamber. Their work doesn’t shift dramatically when the summer arrives, but they do start putting together more events outdoors, and already have their next one in the works.

“The next event that we’ll be planning for our business community will be coming up in August (on) the 19th,” said Hughes. “We’ll be holding our community barbecue for our chamber membership. That will be to kind of start the fall season.”

For many chamber members, meanwhile, summer does represent a big change. Any business in the tourism sector typically sees a boost as people start heading to the lakes and resorts north of the city.

“A lot of people are passing through,” Hughes said. “They’re picking up their groceries, they’re picking up what they might need as they move on to the lakes and kind of explore the area around here.”

Hughes added in addition to bringing on a summer student, they’ll spend much of the rest of the summer focusing on promoting the business community, both within the tourism sector and outside of it. She also said they’ll be doing a lot of work on their digital presence.
