Severe thunderstorm watch in place for areas of Saskatchewan

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued Thursday morning for areas across Saskatchewan.

Regina and Saskatoon were included in the watch, which also included areas around Battleford, Kindersley, Prince Albert National Park, Narrow Hills Provincial Park, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Assiniboia, Estevan and Weyburn.

Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang says the system could be really hit or miss.

“It doesn’t mean every thunderstorm will be severe but there is that possibility that a couple could become severe,” she said. “There is a chance for large hail, strong winds and possibly heavy rain in places.”

Environment Canada said in the advisory, which was issued just after 11:30 a.m., that thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and last into the evening.

“It’s sort of like when you’re watching a pot of water about to boil and you’re wondering where the bubble is going to come up,” Lang said. “It’s hard to forecast this. Just know that the chance is there and the risk does exist.”

Lang says the system could really change throughout the day.

“Watch the sky,” she said. “We ask that people have a way to receive alerts. Lots of people have cellphones now so get yourself an app that will push weather alerts to you.”
