From metal birds to strawberries, Kyla Art Show wows fans in P.A.

It has been a long time coming, but local artists finally showed off their masterpieces at a local art show and sale.

The Kyla Art Show and Sale was held this past weekend at Plaza88 in downtown Prince Albert. The event was a chance for several artists to show their work, with all ticket sales going to support the Optimist Club of P.A.

Held inside the Prince Albert Hall at the event centre, the art on display included paintings featuring everything from fruit to wildlife and floral backdrops.

Several metal sculptures were featured in the show, crafted by local artist Jaret Mayer.

“Most of it is recycled. The metal does the talking,” said Mayer when talking about the inspiration for his pieces.

He added he’s grateful to have these pieces on display for the public to see.

President of the Kyla Art Group, Annette Henbid was also thankful that they were back indoors and not on a screen.

“We’ve been online for the past two years. We usually have our biggest show in the fall, and in the last two years, we just haven’t felt comfortable having to have a public event. Art really can’t be appreciated online as it can in person.”

Another artist that was happy to have her work at the exhibit was this year’s guest artist Janelle Gosselin. Gosselin is a painter from Shellbrook and said virtual shows don’t give you the full picture.

“When it’s online, it looks like it’s two feet by two feet online and you try to show that it’s bigger, but you just don’t get that same feel for the size of the piece.”

Gosselin made this comment as she was showing off one of her signature pieces, a bouquet of flowers inside a vase that was enraptured in colour. She said she draws inspiration from just about anywhere.

“I’ll have something in my house at home or I’ve been in nature somewhere and I’ve taken a picture. I do work from that but then I kinda put my own spin on that.”

Aside from the artists, the Prince Albert Optimist Club was a huge part of the show as ticket sales helped fund their programs.

Treasurer Vince Parker said now that restrictions are no more, they can be a part of some more community events.

“We are planning on quite a few this year, whether it be ticket sales or galas or stuff like that trying to raise funds because our funds all go back to the citizens of Prince Albert in the form of the kids.”

Parker said the warmer weather and the lack of restrictions made for a good turnout for the day.
