Prince Albert prepares to bust a move

Mar 30, 2022 | 4:00 PM

After a near three-year hiatus due to COVID, the Prince Albert Festival of Dance makes its triumphant return this week to the E.A. Rawlinson Centre.

In total, 370 dancers are coming from all across the province, representing eight studios. Rene Boden is on the Board of Directors and told paNOW the festival is a really big deal.

“We were ready to go in 2020 and then just a couple days before we were ready to go everything got shut down. So it means a lot to us to be back and do something normal and provide a really good space for the kids to just be kids again,” she said.

The festival starts Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. and wraps up on Sunday. There will be three sessions per day, and will feature a variety of dance styles, including tap, ballet, and jazz. There will also be musical theatre and even lip syncing.

Tickets are $5 per session, and those who cannot make it to Prince Albert have the option to watch it online through the E.A Rawlinson Centre website.

“So those parents and grandparents across the country or wherever that cannot make it, they can just log in and the cost is also $5 per session,” Boden said.

The Prince Albert Dance Company will have 45 students on stage. Owner and director Bethany Leachman said all the kids are very excited.

“Actually this is our first year running as a studio, so for a lot of our kids it’s our first year being on stage all together as a team,” she said.

Leachman acknowledged the past two years have been challenging for both the instructors and students, but added it’s also made their bond stronger.
