P.A. RCMP reminding residents to be safe online after recent reports of fraud

Mar 5, 2022 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert RCMP are alerting the public to remember to protect themselves online from fraud after they’ve received reports of scams when buying and selling items on the internet.

Police say the incidents of fraud were related to buy/sell groups on social media. Those affected were asked to e-transfer a deposit to hold the item and once they do the seller blocks all contact.

Police are reminding the public to keep a few things in mind when buying items online including do not pay or send a deposit for an item you have not seen, don’t give out personal banking information, remembers to take screenshots of the advertisement and interactions with the seller. They also say if meeting in-person make sure to do so during daylight and in a public place, use common sense, and remember to inform the buy/sell site of suspicious activity.

For those who are a victim of fraud, report it to local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
