Irish Beverages for St. Patrick’s Day
Ah, St. Patcick’s Day….a lovely Irish holiday that has turned into a global reason for everyone to be Irish – and more than a little tipsy – for a day.
When you think of St. Paddy’s day traditions, the first one that jumps to mind is tall glasses of frosty green beer – a tradition started in, you guessed it, New York. It is believed, however, that the tradition was based on an Irish custom of adding a shamrock to a mug of beer for good luck. The second thing that comes to mind is people walking around wearing green shirts that say, “Kiss me, Im Irish.” Given the fact that I’m neither Irish or particularly kissable, we will stick to the drinking portion of the festivities.
When you talk about Irish beverages, there are really three things that come to mind – Irish whiskeys, Irish cream liqueurs such as Baileys, and dark stout beers, the most recognizable brand being Guinness. We have found a way for you to enjoy all three at once – the All-Irish.
For this one you are going to need all three beverages listed above – Irish Whiskey (I’m personally fond of Jameson myself), Bailey’s, and Guinness. In a tall glass, pour about ¾ of a Guinness over ice – not too much ice, you don’t want to water down your beer! Once the fizz from the pour settles down, add 1oz of Irish Whiskey and 1oz of Baileys. After a few of these tasty treats, you’ll be dancing like a drunken leprechaun all night long!
