Canadian Challenge eight-dog teams leave La Ronge, winner announced in 10-dog race

Seven mushers have left La Ronge and are headed to Missinipe as part of the eight-dog, 100-mile Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race.

Mushers left Patterson Park starting at 1 p.m. in two-minute intervals and are expected to reach Missinipe some time this evening for an overnight mandatory stop. They will then restart tomorrow in Missinipe at noon, the same time of the start of the six-dog, 50-mile race. The finish line for both races is in La Ronge.

Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan are represented in the eight-dog race.

“I would say it went really smoothly,” said Canadian Challenge secretary Tanja Tabel. “There was quite a few spectators, so that was really fun.”

All mushers in both races are expected to begin arriving in La Ronge tomorrow around 6 p.m. The winner of the eight-dog race will receive $1,500, while the six-dog winner will take $500.

As of 3 p.m., the 10-dog, 200-mile race in ongoing with two competitors, Mary England Marie-Eve Drouin, still on the trail. Ontario’s Jesse Terry is the winner of the main event, arriving in La Ronge at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. He reached La Ronge about one hour sooner than New Brunswick’s Katherine Langlais who placed second.

Terry, who placed second in the Canadian Challenge in 2020, received a $3,000 top prize.
