Black Lake man faces manslaughter charges; Pinehouse man charged with alcohol-related offences

Black Lake RCMP are now adding a manslaughter charge to 35-year-old Donny Robillard, following a Dec. 11 incident on the Black Lake Denesuline First Nation.

Marvin Bigeye, a 48-year-old man from the First Nation, was taken to hospital with what the RCMP described as “serious injuries” at the time. On Dec. 18, Bigeye died in hospital.

Robillard was already facing two charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. He has now been remanded into custody on his manslaughter charge and is expected to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on Feb. 2.

RCMP reported on Thursday that they pulled the man over on Highway 914 on Jan. 14, and found 10 12-packs of coolers, three 6-packs of coolers and eight individual coolers, five 60-oz bottles of vodka, one 26-oz bottle of vodka, two 24-packs of beer and one flavoured bottle of whiskey.

The man is now facing one count of having, giving, keeping or consuming alcohol in a vehicle, and selling, displaying or keeping alcohol. Both charges are under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act.

“The Saskatchewan RCMP is aware that some individuals will purchase excessive quantities of alcohol in larger centres, transport it to remote communities and resell it for profit at an inflated price.,” RCMP said in a release.

“This practice negatively impacts the safety of our communities. For instance, resellers don’t typically abide by safe selling practices that licensed establishments use – like checking for age or signs of intoxication.”
