After month-long absence, Mintos back in P.A. to face the Trojans

Jan 19, 2022 | 12:00 PM

For the first time in exactly one month, the Prince Albert Mintos will take the ice at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Mintos last played in Prince Albert on Dec. 19 when they beat the Yorkton Secon Maulers 9-2.

Since then, several of their games were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols and the annual Mac’s AAA Tournament, which was to open on Boxing Day in Calgary was cancelled.

The Mintos finally returned to the ice on Sunday when they shutout the Trojans 3-0 in Tisdale.

Now the focus shifts to Prince Albert for the rematch Wednesday night. Head Coach Tim Leonard said the team is looking forward to once again playing in front of the hometown crowd.

“The kids were disappointed that we didn’t get to go to the Mac’s, but I think that break refreshed. We came back and then had to tackle COVID and that’s kind of gone through the room, we seem to be through that hopefully and the kids are just excited to get back playing.”

Despite a strong showing against the Trojans over the weekend, Leonard said the team needs to stay on top of their game and not take their opponent for granted.

“That’s the thing about this league. Anybody can beat anybody. It doesn’t matter if you’re first place or 12th place. If you don’t come to play, you’re going to be in trouble. We’re going to be ready to go at the drop of that book and, hopefully, put in a solid 60 minutes.”

Going into Wednesday’s game, Jacob Cossette leads the team in scoring with 54 points, while Ashton Tait has the most goals with 18.

Puck drop for the Trojans and Mintos goes at 7:00 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
