MELFORT, Sask. — G3 Canada is providing funds for grain rescue equipment in several Manitoba communities.

The donation of $45,000 is part of G3’s support of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) BeGrainSafe program, which raises awareness of the risks of grain entrapment and provides rescue training to local first responders.

The RM of Morris will base its grain rescue equipment in the Rosenort Fire Hall to be dispatched throughout the municipality.

G3 also provided grain rescue gear in 2021 to the Rivers, Minnedosa and Arborg, Man. fire departments.

In previous years, G3 has funded the purchase of grain rescue equipment for fire departments in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The current president of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has been named the vice president of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB).

Bob Lowe will serve on the GRSB executive committee which includes industry leaders and some of the largest stakeholders from the beef supply chain.

Over 500 companies and producer organizations engage in the work of GRSB and its members through its global and 12 regional roundtables.

Regionally focused beef sustainability roundtables and initiatives include Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, Paraguay, Southern Africa, the United States, and others across the globe.

Ian McConnel, director of sustainability for Tyson Foods International Business Unit, has been selected as the president of GRSB.

The federal government is providing funding for a project that will create a new genetic services system for sheep and goats.

The Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement (CCSI) will use the $495,000 to access new developments and industry information on livestock genomics.

CCSI is working with several partners to integrate genetic services, including the Canadian Sheep Breeders Association, Ontario Sheep Farmers, the Canadian Goat Society, Canadian Livestock Records Corporation, Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock, Centre d’expertise en production ovine du Québec, AgSights, and the Canadian Meat Goat Association.

The integrated system will include services such as phenotype measurements on traits such as growth rate and milk yield, training for farmers to adopt new technologies, genetic evaluation, and research and development.
