Raiders land son of Raider legend in 2021 WHL U.S. Priority Draft

Dec 8, 2021 | 12:14 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders added a familiar name to their list when they selected Dmitri Toporowski 21st overall in the 2021 WHL U.S. Priority Draft on Wednesday. The Raiders also selected forward AJ Ulrich minutes later with the 24th overall pick.

Toporowski is the son of Raider legend Shayne Toporowski. This season with Boston Hockey Academy, Toporowski has one goal and 10 points in 31 games as a right-handed defenceman.

Ulrich has a pair of goals and an assist in eight games played with the 15U AAA Colorado Thunderbirds.

This is the second WHL U.S. Priority Draft in history. Last year, the Raiders selected Jamison Sluys fifth overall and Declan Stewart 40th overall last year.

Sluys has three goals in eight games for the Long Island Gulls of the NE Pack Hockey League 16UAAA so far this year. The Gulls are based out of Jericho, New York. Stewart has three goals and five points in 15 games with the 16U AAA Los Angeles Jr. Kings.

The 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, formerly known as the WHL Bantam Draft, will be held on Thursday.

The Raiders will have back-to-back picks in the first round, with the 13th and the 14th overall picks. They acquired the 13th pick from the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Kaiden Guhle trade (the pick originally belonged to the Kelowna Rockets). The Raiders’ 14th overall pick is their own, as given in the draft lottery on June 2.
