Prince Albert Police Service and RCMP warning public about dangers of fentanyl in community

Nov 15, 2021 | 6:59 PM

The Prince Albert Police Service and the Saskatchewan RCMP are alerting the public about illicit drugs such as fentanyl in the community following multiple overdoses in the last week.

According to a joint media release, they’re reminding the public fentanyl is a dangerous drug which can be fatal or cause severe illness, even in small doses.

“Prince Albert RCMP is aware of at least two suspected fentanyl overdoses in our detachment area in the past week,” said Sgt. Lisa Molle of the Prince Albert RCMP in the release. “In both of these cases, naloxone was administered by emergency medical services. Thankfully, neither was fatal. It’s so important that everyone knows that there is fentanyl present in our community and what they should do if someone is overdosing.”

Police say fentanyl is often mixed with other drugs and that purchasing drugs from a street dealer can increase the risk of death as the user cannot be sure what’s in the product. The police responded to a fentanyl overdose on the weekend and naloxone was administered by medical staff.

Police say to recognize an overdose someone may be showing symptoms of being slow, weak or not breathing, blue lips or nails, dizziness, confusion, not waking up, choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds, and drowsiness.

When an overdose occurs call 911 immediately as they can administer naloxone which is a fast acting drug used to temporarily reverse effects. Members of the public can also carry naloxone as the Government of Saskatchewan offers a take home naloxone kit.

They also recommend the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act which provides legal protection for those seeking emergency help.

For those who have information about drug trafficking in their area, can report it to local RCMP detachment by calling 310-RCMP or PAPS at 306-953-4222.
