P.A. athlete plays in lacrosse provincials and Mintos’ camp at the same time

Prince Albert’s Matthew Cudmore loves hockey and lacrosse so much that he can’t decide between the two.

“I like both, honestly. Whatever I’m playing, that’s what I like,” Cudmore said. “I just have to balance them out.”

This weekend, Cudmore’s balancing act between his two sporting loves got its biggest challenge.

Not only did Cudmore compete for the Prince Albert 18U Attack that won a bronze medal at the SLA Field Lacrosse Provincial Championships Friday through Sunday, but he also skated with the Prince Albert Mintos U18 AAA hockey team during their annual fall camp nearby at the Art Hauser Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

“I’m feeling a little tired,” a rosy-cheeked Cudmore said after the final skate of the Mintos’ camp. “It’s pretty hard but I just got a lot of rest to get through it.”

On the ice, Cudmore had 11 goals and 23 points in 31 games for the Prince Albert Pirates at the U15 AA level in the 2019-20 season, before playing three games in last year’s shortened season with the Prince Albert U18 Lakeland Towing Vulcans. The 2005-born forward signed with the Mintos back in April and hopes to earn a spot on the team’s top forward lines.

“I haven’t played a game in a while so that was pretty nice,” Cudmore said. “Just always work hard and you’ll get places.”

Out on the field, Cudmore and his Attack were 2-2 in the tournament, eventually beating the Regina Reign 16-10. Cudmore played in three of the Attack’s five games, and sat out the bronze medal game to ensure he played in the Mintos’ Green and Gold game to wrap up camp Sunday afternoon. Cudmore had two goals and an assist in the tournament, all coming on Friday night in a narrow 15-13 defeat to the Saskatoon Guardians.

“We had our ups and downs, but for the most part we did pretty good, I thought,” Cudmore said. “Coming out with a medal is a big achievement.”
