MELFORT, Sask. — Sask Wheat announced the upcoming retirement of their long-serving general manager.

Dr. Harvey Brooks has served as the GM for Sask Wheat since 2014 and has seen the development of the organization from a start-up commission to its full operations today.

Sask Wheat chair Brett Halstead said Brooks has been instrumental in carrying out the policy decisions of the Board of Directors of Sask Wheat.

“He has represented Saskatchewan wheat producers in important policy debates such as the Canadian Transportation Act review, and currently on the Canadian Grain Act Review,” Halstead said.

Brooks will remain with Sask Wheat until mid-October 2021.

Regina-based Protein Industries Canada has outlined a $5-million agreement to develop improved pea and hemp varieties for Saskatchewan farmers.

CEO Bill Gruel said Protein Industries Canada has reached a deal with 4 companies to develop new pea and hemp varieties for use in food processing.

The group will develop new high protein varieties of pea and hemp for use in new beverages and meat substitutes.

Gruel expects it will take 5 years to see new pea and hemp protein products on store shelves.
