Two hotels and a tax bylaw; city council has full Monday agenda

Prince Albert city council will have a full slate of decisions in front them during their regular meeting on Monday.

Decisions on two hotels with construction set for this year, plus the 2026 property tax bylaws are among the items on the agenda.

A news release issued by the city said that in order to meet their planned spending for the year, they need to raise an additional $3.5 million, which means a 2.03 per cent increase in the general municipal levy.

The $3.5 million was already debated during regular budget meetings in November. Property owners will also see a small increase in the base tax of $12.

“Increasing the base tax recognizes that every property benefits equally from essential services like fire, police, and roads,” said George Marshall, CFO for the City of Prince Albert. “This ensures that the overall tax system is fairer and more balanced for everyone.”

Major drivers of this year’s budget include operations for the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre, salary increases across all city departments, a $724,000 increase for police and $1 million to rehabilitate the 6th Avenue viaduct’s southbound bridge.

The company that plans to build a Marriott Hotel with 99 rooms next to their liquor store in The Yard has applied for the city’s newly created commercial tax incentive.

The rebate is a sliding scale which would have the building taxed $78,000 the first year and progress until it reached full taxation estimated at $260,000 in the fifth year.

Not far from that location, another hotel (a Hyatt) already has construction fence put up and pallets of lumber on site at its location across from the Best Western.

The owner is asking council to approve the development permit. This hotel is planned to have 139 rooms.

Both hotels are near the newly-opened Lake Country Leisure Centre.
