Charlie’s Angels Golf Tournament raises just over $17,000 for local SPCA

After a successful eighth annual Charlie’s Angels Golf Tournament at Mark’s Nine Golf and Country Club, organizers gathered to the Prince Albert SPCA Tuesday afternoon to donate the funds raised.

They saw a total of 44 golfers and 10 caddies participate in the tournament and prior to this year Charlie’s Angels had raised over $110,000 for the SPCA.

Event organizer Holly Abrey-Hare told paNOW they raised $17,092 in honour of her friend Charlene ‘Charlie’ Welch who died from cancer in 2013.

She said they were amazed by their success this year.

“Every year we’re mesmerized with how much support we receive,” she said. “We do all of our fundraising without corporate sponsorship. This is girls hitting up their friends, families, relatives and colleagues asking them to sponsor them in our golf tournament.”

The fundraiser raised around $7,000 more than in 2020 where they donated just over $10,000 to the local SPCA.

“Last year we were unsure if we were able to go ahead and have a tournament and restrictions were lifted and Wendy said, ‘let’s do it,’” Abrey-Hare said.

Eight years the tournament has been going strong and Abrey-Hare explained they’re not sure when the last tournament will be. Every year it’s a lot of work, especially for Mark’s Nine Golf and Country Club, who she said are very committed to the cause and their vision.

“It’s kind of taken on a life of its own. If you’re out there on this day you’d be amazed with the spirit that these ladies have when they’re out there golfing. They know it’s a fundraiser, they put the fun in the fundraiser. We’re not sure how much longer we can do this but we’re here for now,” she added.

President of the Prince Albert SPCA Brent MacDonald said the donation was “extravagant.”

“What happens is that we’re at $50,000 year to date with our veterinarian costs so any proceeds that comes towards the SPCA is very grateful and this is substantial,” he said.

He explained throughout the last year they’ve done many things to collect donations such as acquire bottles to recycle, online garage sales, and other single donations from the community.

“Charlie’s Angels has been one of the biggest for us, by far,” he added.
