Charlie’s Angels raise over $10,000 for local SPCA in annual golf tournament

The Prince Albert SPCA received a generous donation of $10,065 Tuesday afternoon from the Charlie’s Angels to help towards numerous expenses.

They raised the money at the seventh annual Charlie’s Angels golf tournament hosted by the Marks 9 Golf and Country Club on Aug. 29. Every year since 2014, the group hosts an all-female golf tournament to raise money for the SPCA in honour of Charlene “Charlie” Welch who died from cancer in 2013.

After she died, Welch’s friends and family formed the group to keep her legacy alive and they chose the SPCA because Welch loved her dogs more than anything.

Cindy Pillipow, who is with Charlie’s Angels, said animals meant the world to Welch, so they wanted to continue it on.

“Mark’s 9 would always run a lady’s tournament and they decided to switch the lady’s tournament into a fundraiser for the SPCA,” Pillipow said.

Every year they try to grow the event and succeeded raising $23,485 in 2017 and $20,684 in 2019. This year, however, was more challenging due to the pandemic.

“COVID was a hard year,” she said. “It was debatable to run it and Wendy said we need to do something for the SPCA and with COVID it was tough, but I think we still did fantastic.”

They had 36 people come out, which is half of the participants they usually have, to participate in the tournament and collected multiple donations from the community.

SPCA Manager Ashlee Bober said it is incredible to receive the financial help from the Charlie’s Angels every year.

“It’s something that having this income significantly helps us with the [animals] who are in desperate need,” she told paNOW. “For example, if we have ones that need amputations, have injuries or cats in wintertime that have frozen ears that maybe have to get surgery to get them removed.

“It allows us to be able to help them because it is all very costly and every little bit [of] the help we get from the Charlie’s Angels significantly helps towards going to help them medically as well as just the overall care of the animals,” Bober added.

The SPCA also received numerous supplies such as dog and cat food from the Charlie’s Angels.
