DAVID SARGEANT
March 8, 1940 – February 28, 2021
David Gordon Sargeant passed away at his home at Emma Lake, SK on Sunday, February 28, 2021 with his daughter Larissa by his side, after battling prostate cancer for over 5 years. We’re welcoming all to the Celebration of David’s Life which will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at Plaza 88, 888 Central Ave, Prince Albert, SK, S6V 4V1, with Rev. Nora Vedress officiating. Family and friends unable to attend the service may view it online at http://www.livememorialservices.com/Home/ServiceDetail/14893 .
Dave was born in Wilkie, SK on Friday, March 8, 1940 to Rev. Jack and Lillian Sargeant and lived his early years there before moving with his family to Saskatoon where he attended King George Elementary School and Bedford Road High School. He worked many jobs in his younger years acquiring many skills, including cooking on the DEW Line up north where he acquired his love of cooking and shared many stories with his family.
In 1962, he met the love of his life, Sonjia and they were married on November 21, 1964 and together had a son, David in 1965. They built their first home together in Saskatoon, then moved to Winnipeg for a few years and had 2 more children there, daughters Larissa in 1969 and Christine in 1970 before moving back to the home they built in Saskatoon in 1971 where Dave took a job at Robin Hood Multifoods Flour Mill. In his many years at Robin Hood, Dave built many lasting friendships. He looked forward to his Annual Fishing Trip with some of his co-workers as well as the Robin Hood Annual Family Picnic and even had great times making sausage out in the garage with friends he made at work. Dave and Sonjia raised their children together in Saskatoon at their family home until Dave’s career ended at Robin Hood and they moved full-time up to Emma Lake in 1995 where they both always wanted to live out their retirement. At the lake, he enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing, kayaking and anything outdoors!! In his retirement years, Dave worked as an Income Tax Specialist at Grant’s Tax and H & R Block in Prince Albert and also held a position as a Councillor at the RM of Lakeland in the community where he lived. He and Sonjia enjoyed Curling and socializing in the community and Dave had a standing morning Tee Time at the Emma Lake Golf Course. Dave and Sonjia also enjoyed travel and took many international trips together. They mostly looked forward to visits at the lake with their 3 special grandsons, Ethan, Keenan and Rian whom they loved spending time with. When Sonjia fell ill, Dave barely left her side and started his own Income Tax business so that he could care for her at home. When speaking with his children he would say how “he was just doing taxes for one of his friends the other day…” Every story about his clients started this way and it was clear that his clients were more than just his clients and he regarded them all as friends. Dave & Sonjia were just about to celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary when Sonjia passed in 2006. After Sonjia’s passing, Dave spent as much time as he could with his children and grandsons and five years later was blessed with his only granddaughter, Alicia. He adored her and did whatever she asked! When Christine & Ethan took in an International student from Vietnam in 2012 (Minh, who has become part of our family), Dave took him on as another grandson. Dave was so proud of Ethan, Keenan, Rian, Alicia and Minh and loved them all dearly and felt rich in their love as well. He was very devoted to all of his grandkids. He tried his best to attend every event and looked very forward to their phone calls, FaceTimes and visits at the lake!
